Clear Mouth, Clear Mind
Ancient rituals for modern clarity — tongue scraping, oil pulling, and making daily cleansing a joy rather than a bore or chore.
In a time when clarity is rare and overstimulation is the norm, small rituals can become powerful anchors to keep as growing and developing on the path.
One of the simplest — and most underrated — is the act of cleansing the mouth.
In Ayurveda, the mouth is more than just the start of digestion. It reflects your entire internal state — physically, energetically, even emotionally.
Practices like tongue scraping and oil pulling, while now gaining popularity in the West as oral hygiene trends, are ancient kriyas — subtle yogic cleansing techniques designed to purify not just the body, but the channels of perceptionand prāṇa.
When paired with Jala Neti (nasal cleansing), they form a morning ritual that clears the gateways of breath, digestion, speech, and awareness.
🪒 Tongue Scraping — Ancient Simplicity, Immediate Impact
Each morning, a layer of āma (toxins and metabolic waste) gathers on the tongue — especially after disturbed sleep or sluggish digestion.
Using a copper or silver scraper, gently draw this residue from back to front. It takes seconds — and can shift everything.
Traditional benefits:
Removes toxins from the digestive tract
Stimulates internal organs via tongue marma points
Clears vak srotas — the channel of speech
Modern benefits:
Reduces bad breath
Improves taste sensitivity
Supports oral and digestive health
There’s something symbolic here — clearing the tongue before speaking into the world.
A quiet vow to begin the day from a clean, conscious place.
🥥 Oil Pulling — Swishing for Vitality
Known as gandusha or kavala, oil pulling involves swishing oil — usually sesame or coconut — in the mouth for 10–20 minutes.
Often promoted as a natural mouthwash, in Ayurveda it’s a kriya — a subtle purification practice that draws out toxins, nourishes tissues, and grounds the nervous system.
Traditional benefits:
Removes deep-seated toxins from the mouth, jaw, and throat
Nourishes oral tissues and nerves
Supports ojas — your deep vitality
Grounds Vata, cools Pitta, and balances Kapha
Modern benefits:
Reduces harmful bacteria and plaque
Supports gum health and freshens breath
Nourishes the oral microbiome
I often hum softly while I swish.
Or repeat a mantra like Ham-Sa or So-Ham — letting oil pulling become a meditation in motion, a silent tuning of inner frequencies.
🌊 Why This Complements Jala Neti
If you caught my recent Substack post on Jala Neti, you’ll know the power of rinsing the nasal passages with warm salt water — clearing the air channels, enhancing breath, and refining prāṇa flow.
Tongue scraping and oil pulling work in harmony with neti:
Jala Neti clears the upper channel (breath, prāṇa)
Oil pulling and scraping clear the lower channel (digestion, speech)
Together, they support a clarified inner space — physically and energetically.
Think of them as part of a holistic reset:
See clearly. Speak clearly. Breathe freely. Digest fully.
🌿 A Refined Morning Flow
Here’s a simple yet potent daily sequence:
Wake early — ideally during brahma muhurta (pre-dawn sattvic time)
Scrape the tongue — 5–10 gentle strokes
Jala Neti — rinse nasal passages with warm saline water
Oil pull — swish for 10–20 minutes with infused oil
(perhaps while watching the sunrise or sitting with Agni Hotra)Spit mindfully — into the earth or bin, not the sink
Saltwater rinse — to clear any residual oil
(Optional) Nasya oil — to seal and nourish the sinuses
✨ Ayurvedic Oil Infusions — A Simple Boost
Take your oil pulling to the next level with these additions:
A pinch of turmeric (anti-inflammatory)
A dash of triphala powder (tridoshic detox)
A drop of clove, peppermint, or tulsi essential oil (oral-grade only)
Gently warm the oil before use — Ayurveda favours warmth over cold
Let this be more than hygiene.
Let it be a ritual of renewal.
A daily remembrance:
I clear what is not needed. I begin again.
These rituals are simple, but their impact is profound.
You’re not just cleaning your mouth — you’re tuning your system.
Setting your energy.
Opening the gate of truth for integral communication and energetic coherence.
And in a world full of noise, that’s no small thing.
With love from the inside out,
Stuart

I used to follow the morning routine you outlined, but after years of caretaking that involved traveling between Israel and the States every 3 to 4 months and spending a lot of time away from home, I gradually lost those habits.
After 6 years, my body finally broke down, prompting a wake-up call to prioritize my self-care again. I’m now a week into using a neti pot daily, and your post reminded me of other important elements, particularly oil pulling. I plan to add tongue scraping and oil pulling to my routine as well.
Thank you for the reminder!
